1920s/1930s Necklace with Brown Glass Beads
Description
This attractive item features rounded glass beads and drops in a colour that we seldom come across in necklaces of the 1920s/30s. The beads and drops display an amber-like shade, to which has been added random stripes in a rich, dark brown colour. They are also faceted, adding shimmering effects to the necklace as the glass catches the light. The drops at the centre of the necklace graduate in size towards the base, and they are suspended from individual, curved-edged sections. The sections are made from silvertone metal, which has also been used for the slim shapes which form the upper part of the necklace. The clasp is a spring-ring type, and we notice that it is a replacement for the original one. The replacement clasp looks to be a similar age as the necklace, and it bears the inscription '925' (for sterling silver). Please note that at 385mm in length, this necklace is a slightly smaller size than many necklaces we see from the same era (which tend to measure between 400 and 430mm long).

Good. The glass elements of this necklace have survived in excellent condition, as they are clean and bright, and show rich colour. Close examination of the glass reveals some tiny nicks here and there, but these cannot be seen without a magnifier. The metal rings which hold the glass drops are all secure, as are the rings which link the other sections of the necklace together. The silvertone finish of the metal sections has not stood the test of time as successfully, as it reveals some wear in places in the form of dark spotting. The metal rings would originally have shown a silvertone finish, but now reveal the more goldtone hue of the base metal underneath. However, in our view, the metal elements still have an attractive overall appearance, with the curving sections (above the glass drops) retaining much of their smooth and shining finish. We have also taken the alteration to the clasp into account when setting the price for this item; the current clasp works efficiently and is secure.
